Taiwan Joins South Korea in WTO Complaint, Reasoning Not Clear

Energy - Renewables 207 South Korea 605 Taiwan 231 Tariffs 1870 U.S. 5404

The Taiwanese government has joined South Korea in lodging a WTO complaint about the U.S. section 201 decision to apply tariffs on solar panel and component imports. The move is somewhat curious. It has not joined South Korea’s broader complaint about the section 201 process itself. Furthermore, Taiwanese solar panel exports to the U.S. had already fallen 95% in the 12 months to November 30 on a year earlier due to a prior tariff case. Taiwan’s suppliers have not been major players – even at their peak Taiwanese suppliers only accounted for 5% of U.S. imports.
