Suez Bulker Rate Cut Shows Canals Face Trump Tariff Risks Too

The Suez Canal Authority has cut the rates it charges dry bulk carriers and tankers. That follows a 1% drop in bulker transits of the Canal in the past three months to February 28 on a year earlier. The move likely also anticipates increased competition from the Panama Canal, which saw a 4% drop in transits in February (Suez did 3% better). The Baltic Dry Index – a gauge for the Canal’s users’ earnings – fell 8% in March vs. February.
