13th Straight Rise In America’s Deficit Overshadows China, NAFTA Negotiations

The U.S. trade deficit (including goods and services) climbed 10% in March vs. a year earlier, the 13th straight increase. That was largely due to an increase in capital goods imports. Additionally the services’ surplus fell for a fourth straight month after the growth in financial services imports of 13% exceeded exports’ 4%. The data will do little to improve the Trump administration’s view of trade relations, driven as it is by the U.S. trade-in-goods deficit.
