Japanese Beef Tariffs May Hurt Relations After Abe and Trump Meet

Japanese beef imports may come back under tariff restrictions under a growth-based mechanism after prior tariff increases ended from April. Should they return, relations with the U.S. may worsen. They have proven testy anyway and failed to progress at recent talks between Prime Minister Abe and President Trump. U.S. exports of beef to Japan are already in decline having fallen 1% in the first quarter on a year earlier vs. a 22% expansion in the prior three quarters. Exports to the rest of the world have been expanding though, by 18% in 1Q, suggesting all is not lost for American ranch...
