Transshipment Not Really The Point As India Dials Up Fewer Phones

The Indian Cellular Association has warned that “Make in India” duties on mobile phones may result in transshipment of Chinese phones through ASEAN countries to avoid the tariffs. So far the duties have simply led to lower imports, with shipments to India from all countries falling 20% in March after a 31% drop in February vs. a year earlier. China remains the dominant supplier, accounting for 98% of shipments in March 2018 from 95% a year earlier.
