The Canadian government may be considering “safeguarding” duties against imports of steel and aluminum to avoid a flood of imports that would otherwise have gone to the U.S. There’s already been a rise in imports of both products with a 16% rise in imports of intermediate steel in April on a year earlier and 24% surge in aluminum. While reportedly aimed at Chinese exports they will potentially capture U.S. exports too as retaliation for America’s section 232 duties that also apply to Canadian exports.
