Hapag-Lloyd has implemented peak season surcharges on container shipments from Europe to the east coast of South America. That’s part of a sector-wide effort to improve profitability after rates in 2Q failed to keep track with fuel and handling costs. The matter is pressing for Hapag-Lloyd as it had to cut its profit guidance for 2018 as a result. It has been one of the fastest growing liners on Europe-Brazil lanes with a 40% rise in shipments in the three months to May 31.
