Felixstowe’s Failings Leads Orient Overseas to Follow Maersk’s Lead, For Now

Orient Overseas is the latest container-line, following Maersk, to move a service away from the British port of Felixstowe due to ongoing congestion issues. The issue may prove temporary (though taking longer than Hutchison ports “would have liked”) while moving to other ports isn’t a panacea, as seen at Liverpool2 following a shift in traffic that would otherwise have routed through Felixstowe. Long-haul traffic from Felixstowe has slumped since July with arrivals of freight in the U.S. down 76% on a year earlier in August so far on a pro-rata basis.
