The latest round of NAFTA negotiations failed to secure a trilateral deal, though the Trump administration has nonetheless notified Congress it intends to sign a new agreement from November 30. The White House noted Canada will be included only “if it is willing”. The trade deficit (the administration’s “success metric”) held by America with Canada of $15 billion in the past 12 months is mainly the result of a $57 billion energy products deficit which a revised NAFTA deal won’t sort out.
