Xi’s Africa Initiatives Seek to Diversify Resource-Led Imports, Shake off “Debt Trap” Tag

President Xi has unveiled eight initiatives as part of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, seeking to diversify away from infrastructure investments that have raised accusations of a “debt trap”. In trade that will include trade facilitation measures and increased non-resource imports rather than a full FTA. China’s imports from Africa overall already rose 45% in the 12 months to July 31 on a year earlier to reach $88 billion.
