The Trump administration’s trade policies are having a knock-on effect for the forthcoming midterm elections at the state level, with tariffs on Chinese exports and resulting retaliation featuring in the Senate candidates’ debate in North Dakota. That’s surprising given North Dakota is the least exposed U.S. state to exports to China. Only 0.86% of the state’s exports in the 12 months to Aug. 31 went to China.
