BMW Revs Up Plans for U.S. Engine Factory Before Tariffs Choke Trade

The big three German automakers have all responded to the threat of tariffs from the Trump administration with commitments to increased U.S. investments. Most tangibly BMW has committed to start producing engines in the U.S. rather than import from Germany, reducing its tariff risks. In aggregate U.S. imports of automotive engines were worth $21.2 billion in the 12 months to Oct. 31, with shipments from Germany worth 6.1% of the total.
