Vale and Ternium Deliver on EU’s Steel Safeguarding Fears

Brazil 416 European Union 882 Materials - Metals/Mining 796 Metals - Steel 544 Tariffs 1870

The Brazilian government is seeking damages payments from the European Union at the WTO due to EU safeguarding duties against steel imports. The EU’s duties were a response to concerns that the U.S. section 232 duties would lead exports to be diverted to Europe. That’s certainly been the case with exports from Brazil to the EU having risen by 15.7% year over year in 4Q compared to a 24.9% drop in shipments to the U.S. The leading exporters involved in shipments to the EU from Brazil include Vale with 24.6% of the total, Ternium and ThyssenKrupp among others.
