Price Deflation Points To Chinese Exporters Taking Some Tariff Pain

U.S. import price deflation continued in March with prices excluding food and fuel having fallen by 0.7% year over year, the fastest rate of decline since Sept. 2016. There was a 0.9% drop in import prices from China while ASEAN import prices fell 1.1%. The pace of decline in prices from China has accelerated since September and may reflect exporters bearing some of the cost of higher tariffs.
