USMCA Watch: Closure Not Close as Mexico’s Steel, Aluminum Exports Plummet

Steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Mexican exports are now the main sticking point in ratification of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Mexico’s Undersecretary for North America Jesús Seade has stated “there cannot be a close” of USMCA implementation without removing the tariffs following a meeting with the U.S. government. Mexico’s U.S.-bound exports of steel and aluminum products covered by the duties fell 26.8% year over year in March.
