The U.S. government has approved a $2.22 billion arms sale to Taiwan including M1A2 Abrams tanks and Stinger missiles. That compares to total U.S. export order approvals for all countries of $32.6 billion in year-to-date, up from $30.4 billion at the same time last year and $19.0 billion in the same period of 2017. Exports to Taiwan were just $402 million in the 12 months to May 31, down from a peak of $2.02 billion in the 12 months to Nov. 2015. While helping the Trump administration’s aims of boosting exports, it may jeopardize the recently restarted trade talks with China.
