The Canadian government has asked for the WTO’s permission to apply retaliatory tariffs against U.S. imports in relation to a trade dispute covering supercalendered paper. The timing is notable in coming just ahead of the implementation of USMCA from July 1. Canada still dominates U.S. imports of the paper, used in magazine printing, with an 85.5% share in the 12 months to April 30. Shipments are in decline though and reached their lowest in April since at least 2009.
