The Indonesian Coal Mining Association’s members and Chinese buyers have committed to a new shipping contract covering 200 million tons of thermal coal in 2021. The Chinese buyers may be looking to reduce their reliance on supplies from Australia which accounted for 64.0% of the total in 2019. China’s government has taken a hawkish stance recently, leading to blocks against a variety of Australian imports.
